Regulation 14

Glazing in the Workplace & Public Buildings

This description is intended as a guide only, for further information please consult the appropriate regulations.

What you need to know for your own safety…….

Workplace Health, Safety, and Welfare Approved Code of Practice L24 Regulation 14 is a legal requirement that took effect on 1st January 1996.  This stipulates that glass in all doors and sides of doors up to 1500 mm must be safety (anti-shatter) rated to at least Class C BS 6206, unless it is narrower than 250 mm, (and Class B where the glass is wider than 900 mm).  This also applies to any low glass up to 800 mm from the ground.

These regulations are also incorporated into Building Regulations BS 6262 Part 4, Safety, Human Impact.

All glass in swimming, showering, bathing areas, and sports areas, where there is a risk of slipping on wet surfaces, whatever the height must be BS 6206 compliant.

Any low glass (especially on stairwells) that has limited railing protection needs to be BS 6206 compliant, unless the railing is made of vertical bars 75 mm or less between each rail.

Manifestation – large expanses of glass having uninterrupted areas that could be mistaken as ‘open air’ must have a line of easily visible manifestation, such as broken or solid lines.

Critical Locations in Brief

A.  Between the finished floor level and 1,500 mm (shoulder height) above that level, in doors,
and/or
in side panels that fall within 300mm of either edge of the door.

B.  Between the finished floor level and 800mm (waist height) in the case of any low glass.

It is important to note that if any part of a glass panel falls within these areas the whole panel must meet the requirements even if it extends above the 800 and 1500 level where applicable.

 1.  Reglaze all relevant areas (critical) with laminated or toughened glass, plastic glazing sheet, or safety wired glass of Class C BS 6206 or above, (not normal Georgian wired which doesn’t conform), that complies with all requirements for impact safety BS 6206, and have them marked as such.  (Most Georgian wired panes are fire safety tested, but not impact tested unless special class C and so marked).

2.  Have the relevant safety window film professionally installed with the minimum of disruption.  Our fully tested safety film will up-rate all the glass to either BS 6206 Class B (or Class A if chosen) at a fraction of the cost of changing the glass.

Overall Advantages of Window Film and Regulation 14

bullet

Lower cost upgrade with every pane correctly marked.

bullet

The convenience of existing glass being upgraded in situ with minimum disruption.

bullet

A hard coat scratch resistant surface ensuring durability with a 7-year factory backed warranty.

bullet

Please note you also have a choice of combined solar control and safety films to greatly reduce solar heat gain, glare, fading, and giving safety at the same time.  These can be used where the sun affects the environment of your rooms, and your glass needs to be up-rated as well.
